This is what's up.
10 years ago I applied to go on MCC's one year, young adult SALT program. I was 18. The first year someone can go on SALT. Needless to say, there was no placement for me. The dream to join SALT never left and now, 10 years later and the last year I am able to go (I'm getting too old...), off to Kenya I go!
This August, for one year, I will be joining MCC’s work in Kenya as a Conservation Agriculture (CA) Extensionist. In Kitui, Kenya, a village 3 hours drive east of Nairobi (Kenya’s capital), I will work with a local partnering organization, SASOL, and their work in promoting CA. CA has demonstrated to improve the soil allowing for an increase in productivity. A few years ago, I spent a month in southern Africa learning about CA, how it is being implemented in Africa, and the benefits it has had on the land and on the people. I hope to use what I have learnt to join the Kenyan people in increasing food security.
During this time, my assignment is to engage in SASOL’s CA projects through connecting with farmers, SASOL staff, government extension agents and local agriculture businesses. I will also assist SASOL staff in designing and carrying out training in CA, crop marketing, and local savings and loan associations. The assignment description sounds overwhelming, but I imagine once there and settled it will be more refined to how I can best be used for their services.
I hope this blog will give you the opportunity to travel to Kenya without having to fend off the baboons.
